Photographed by Wildlife Photographer Paul McDougall
The African Lion (Panthera leo) is, in my view, the most majestic animal in nature.
I have been priviledged to have visited Africa on many occasions, both as a Wildlife Photographer and also as a Photo Safari Tour Guide. I must say that one of the highlights of my career has been to photograph lions in the wild.
Photographing African Lions (Panthera leo)
African lions once roamed most of Africa. But the species has disappeared from 94 percent of its historic range and can only be found today in parts of sub-Saharan Africa. These lions mainly stick to the grasslands, scrub, or open woodlands where they can more easily hunt their prey, but they can live in most habitats aside from tropical rainforests and deserts.
I photographed my first lions in Botswana in 1997.
Since then I have spent many hours with them mainly in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.
They are some of my favourite animals to photograph, as they live in groups (prides) there tends to be a lot of social interaction, which can lead to many images being captured in a short period of time. Over the years I have tried to become more creative with my images and capture lions differently.
I now have a very extensive portfolio of lion images taken over the last 20+ years.
I would like my lion images to raise awareness of the plight of lions and the fact that they are disappearing at an alarming rate. With only 23,000-39,000 mature individuals estimated to remain in the wild and with three quarters of populations in decline, the African Lion is currently classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List assessment.
