SUMMARY:Beavers Blairgowrie 24-07-26
DESCRIPTION:Beavers \nLocation: Blairgowrie \nI have teamed up with a local wildlife expert and guide to facilitate this beaver wildlife photography workshop on the river at Blairgowrie. \nWe will find one of the local groups of beavers and then sit with them and capture images of them as they forage for food and move around the river and riverbanks. \nSeeing and photographing beavers is an incredible experience and these families of beavers are fairly relaxed around people. \nIt is a wonderful opportunity to capture images of these beautiful and unique animals. \nThe Time of this trip would be from approximately 6:00pm – 9:30pm \nAs with all my workshops I will be on hand to give advice on settings and various different shots that can be achieved. The group will be a maximum of 4 people so there will be plenty of opportunities to work with everyone one on one if required. \nThe price does not include accommodation. It also excludes all meals.

SUMMARY:Improving / Advanced Workshop 02-09-26
DESCRIPTION:Improving/Advanced Workshop \nLocation: Glasgow \nThis workshop is designed for people who have knowledge of photography and know how to do the basics of wildlife photography. It is also intended for people that have a good understanding of their cameras and are already taking good images\, but want to take their photography to a higher level. \nThroughout the workshop we will look at and discuss what makes a good image. We will talk about the basics of composition but when we should look to do something different\, we will also look at how we can use the environment to add impact to our images and how backgrounds can make or break an image. We will spend a lot of time looking at different types and angles of light and how to maximise the lighting conditions that we have to truly change the way an image can look. \nWe will also look for specific behaviours and will focus on capturing action shots of the birds in flight and interacting with each other. I will be on hand to explain basic behaviour of our subjects and the signs that you need to look for to capture dramatic behaviour shots. \nWe will also focus on wildlife portraits and how to take snapshots of birds to the next level. \nThe focus of the workshop is on capturing images of common species in a different way\, so we will be photographing swans\, ducks and other water birds. \nThe great thing about this location is that there are numerous different subjects that we can get quite close to and it gives us lots of opportunities to try different things and experiment. The light at this location is also very good. \nBy the end of this workshop you will have a better idea of how a few small tweaks can completely transform your wildlife photography. \nCourse Contents\n• What makes a good image\n• Mastering the Angles of Light\n• Photographing behaviour\n• Photographing Portraits\n• Slow Shutter Speeds\n• Mastering Settings

SUMMARY:White Tailed Eagle and Raptors of Mull 01-10-26
DESCRIPTION:White Tailed Eagle and Raptors of Mull \nLocation: Isle of Mull \nThe meeting place for the trip is in Oban. You can either travel up in the evening and stay in Oban or can travel early in the morning. Ferry times for the trip will be given at booking time. \nMeeting in Oban. Time will be given at booking and will depend on the time of our boat trip with Mull Charters. We will travel in my vehicle to Mull and the ferry cost is included in the price of the booking. When we arrive on Mull we will either do a short drive around the island looking for Hen Harrier\, Short eared Owl and Golden Eagle or we will go directly to the boat meeting point. After the boat trip we will do another search of the island for the other species of raptor. We will return to Oban on the ferry mid evening. \nThe boat trip is an incredible experience. We will take a set route to search for some of the many local White-Tailed Eagles. When we are in their territory\, fish will be thrown into the water and the eagles will come to the boat and then will dive and pluck the fish from the surface of the water. It is a truly amazing experience and a trip that I have done many times over the past 8 years. It never disappoints and you never get tired of watching these impressive birds. \nPlease note that the boat trip is weather dependent. If the boat cannot sail then an alternative activity will be provided which will include more time looking for birds on the Isle of Mull\, if the group would like to we can also use the additional time to search for otters. \nAs with all my workshops I will be on hand to give advice on settings and various different shots that can be achieved. The group will be a maximum of 4 people so there will be plenty of opportunities to work with everyone one on one if required. \nThe price includes the Mull Charters Boat Trip\, Transport from Oban and whilst on Mull. \nThe price does not include accommodation. It also excludes all meals.

SUMMARY:Golden Eagle Hide Workshop 05-10-26
DESCRIPTION:Golden Eagle Hide Workshop \nLocation: Near Kirkcudbright \nHave you ever wanted the opportunity to photograph one of the most amazing Scottish Birds up close? \nThe golden eagle is the top predator in the Scottish countryside; it is a massive bird of prey that mainly hunts rabbits and mountain hares but will also catch foxes\, young deer and large birds like grouse. It can be seen soaring high in the sky in upland areas and remote glens in the north and west of Scotland and there are now some pairs further south in Scotland including in Dumfries and Galloway. \nA massive bird of prey\, the golden eagle’s wings and tail are only marginally smaller than the rarer white-tailed eagle. Adults are mainly dark brown\, with a golden head and neck. Young birds have white patches in their wings and a white base to the tail. \nAfter several years work Scottish Photography Hides is now able to offer the most iconic of British birds the Golden Eagle. \nThis hide offers up close views of the eagle and is an extremely reliable location to be able to see and photograph the Golden Eagle. \nThis hide is situated on a moorland quite close to a road so not to difficult to access\, but a degree of fitness is required on the 5 minute walk as there is a 15 metre 45 degree incline to walk up just before you reach the hide. Apart from that it is a simple walk. \nOn this workshop we will have exclusive use of the 4 person hide and the 2 single hides \nThe main hide itself holds 4 people and has office chairs\, a toilet and gimbal plates so a tripod head is best. If not\, a beanbag will suffice. \nThere is also 2 separate single occupancy hides each with office chairs and gimbal plates. In the 2 single hides there is no toilet and all you have is a bucket as you cannot leave the hide under any circumstances until the end of the day. \nI will allocate the hides based on the ability and needs of the group. \nThere are strict requirements for this hides:\n• You must be prepared to sit in silence for a long period of time\n• Once in the hide you cannot leave until it gets dark.\n• Hand holding the camera and lens is not permitted – you must use a gimbal/tripod head or beanbag.\n• Entry in to the hides is usually early morning (meeting times will be given at the time of booking). \nOnce set up you cannot move lenses for any reason. You will be pointing your lens at the carcass and must stay fixed on this for the duration. No incoming flight shots must be attempted\, and you must let the Eagle start feeding before any shots are taken. \nYou cannot leave the hide until dusk so please bare this in mind before booking. It is imperative these birds do not see anyone entering or leaving the hide. \nThose on DSLR cameras must shoot in silent and single shot. No burst modes. \nLens wise around 400mm full frame is best. 500mm is also good however you might clip wings if it spreads them while tearing the carcass. \nAs this is a silent hide camera settings will be given before the workshop and a run down of the type of images to look for will also be given. Once in the main hide any communication will be minimal\, for the single hides communication will be done via text. Therefore it is essential for this workshop that you have a basic understanding of your camera settings. \nDue to the nature of the species. It is advised to be prepared for a cancelation near your date as if it hasn’t showed for 2 or 3 days I advise for people to postpone. This doesn’t happen often and is a rare occurrence but if booking accommodation then please book with free cancellation. \nIn the unlikely event of a no show a free day is offered in future within a 12 month period – this will likely be an unguided visit where you will go back on your own.

SUMMARY:Improving / Advanced Workshop 29-10-26

SUMMARY:Isle of Mull - Otter Workshop 21-11-26
DESCRIPTION:Isle of Mull – Otter Workshop \nLocation: Isle of Mull \nThis is a 4 day workshop to give you the best opportunity to photograph otters. \nThe Isle of Mull has a very healthy population of Otters yet they can be both elusive and frustrating. Sightings can never be guaranteed\, and many frustrating hours can be spent walking or driving and searching the coastline. \nOtters are mythical creatures and many people have never seen an Otter. However\, they have often seen their signs\, i.e. their spraint or droppings. Here on Mull\, the otter hunts during the day and they are more governed by the state of the tide\, than whether it is morning or night. Otters are only occasionally seen in fresh water here\, and it is just offshore near seaweed covered rocks where you will most likely see one. \nThey find their prey mostly in the sea\, but they are not sea otters\, a different species found on the Pacific coast. The Mull otter is the Eurasian otter\, Lutra lutra\, a member of the Mustelid family which also includes Badgers\, Mink and Pine Marten. The Eurasian Otter is the only species of otter in the UK\, occupying sea\, rivers and lakes across the country. An adult otter will be about 1-1.2 metres long from tip of the nose to end of the tail. \nWhen the sea is calm\, it may be easier to spot an otter swimming on the surface while fishing. However wild the weather\, otters must try to look for food\, so otters can be seen in all weathers at all times of the day. \nThis workshop is designed to give you the best opportunity to photograph otters. Nothing is guaranteed\, but we will search for them in the best locations. You will be given advice on the correct fieldcraft to use\, what signs to look for and the best settings to capture some incredible otter images\, \nMull also has a wealth of other wildlife and away from the otters we will attempt to find White Tailed Eagle\, Golden Eagle\, Hen Harrier\, Short eared Owl and Red Deer. \nThe Schedule Will be as follows:\nDay 1: Arrival (approx. 1pm)– Afternoon/Evening Otters\nDay 2: Full Day Otters\nDay 3: Full Day Otters\nDay 4: Departure (approx. 1pm) – Early morning Otters \nThe price includes all transport whilst on the Isle of Mull and all photographic guiding. \nThe price does not include accommodation. \nIt also excludes all meals.

SUMMARY:Mountain Hares Workshop 05-12-26
DESCRIPTION:Mountain Hares \nLocation: Blairgowrie/Glenshee \nI have teamed up with a local wildlife expert and guide to facilitate this Mountain Hare wildlife photography workshop in the mountains around Glenshee. \nWe will walk in to the mountains to search for and find local populations of the hares. We will then sit with them and try to carefully approach them to enable us to get some interesting images. It is worth noting that they are found in areas that are just spectacular in terms of scenery so sometimes shooting wider and showing the environment can provide more impact than shooting just close ups. \nSeeing and photographing hares is an incredible experience and these hares can be fairly relaxed around people if treated with respect and approached in the correct way. \nIt is a wonderful opportunity to capture images of these beautiful and unique animals. \nThe Time of this trip would be from approximately 8am – 3pm \nThe start and end time is highly variable on these workshops as they are very much weather dependent. The exact start time will be given a week before the date. \nAs with all my workshops I will be on hand to give advice on settings and various shots that can be achieved. The group will be a maximum of 2 people so there will be plenty of opportunities to work with everyone one on one if required. \nThere is also an opportunity to add Pine Martens to the day. After we have finished with the hares we will use a hide near Blairgowrie to photograph images of these elusive animals\, there is a high success rate in this hide and the hide is equipped with floodlights to enable us to shoot after it gets dark. The hide is also heated. \nContact me to add on the Pine Marten \nThe price does not include accommodation. It also excludes all meals. If booking accommodation\, I would suggest booking with free cancellation due to the possibility of adverse weather.

SUMMARY:Golden Eagle Hide Workshop 08-12-26

SUMMARY:Scottish Photography Hides Workshop – Kingfisher\, Pine Marten 09-12-26
DESCRIPTION:Scottish Photography Hides Workshop – Kingfisher\, Pine Marten \nLocation: Kirkcudbright \nPlease note that this can be combined with the day before or day after Scottish Photography Hides Workshop. \nScottish Photography Hides Workshop – Kingfisher\, Pine Marten \nThis hide workshop is designed to highlight the very best of the Dumfries & Galloway area in south-west Scotland. \nThe Scottish Lowlands in this part of Scotland are a real gem\, They are often overlooked for the more iconic Scottish wildlife destinations of the highlands and islands. But you won’t be disappointed as the wildlife is rich\, unique and plentiful. We work with Alan McFadyen as no one knows the wildlife of this area better than him. Alan is an award winning photographer and his hides have been used by fellow professionals and hobbyists alike\, the hides have featured on BBC\, ITV\, national papers and have provided many award winning images and was the face of Canons 1DX mkii advertising campaign. \nWe’ll be based throughout the trip near the town of Kirkcudbright where we will have access to 4 carefully selected hides situated in a number of locations. \nDaytime Hide – Kingfisher:\nThe Kingfisher Photography Hide is spacious inside and there is also ample space to store bags etc. behind you. The Kingfishers here are regular visitors and have been coming to the hide for several years. The choice and variety of perches and backgrounds is excellent and some really good images can be captured here of this otherwise difficult to photograph bird. \nEvening Hide – Pine Marten:\nLocated on Scotland’s South West Coast near Kirkcudbright\, over the past four years Alan has worked tirelessly to develop a unique opportunity to photography the elusive Pine Marten. The hide is on the edge of a pine forest with years of conservation work taking place to establish a breeding population in the region. LED lighting is used to illuminate the area and low powered flash will be used (no experience needed). The backdrops and set ups in this hide give you a unique opportunity to capture some really different images of this hard to see animal. \nThe start time is at approximately 7am for the daytime hide\, we will usually finish at around 2pm or whenever we have had enough of waiting/taking images. \nThe evening hide will start at approximately 7pm and can finish as late as midnight. \nExact timings for the hides and meeting places will be given on booking. \nThere are 2 options for this hide either a one day trip or 2 consecutive days. It is not possible to swap the days around so please book both days or whichever includes the subjects that interest you. \nAs with all my workshops I will be on hand to give advice on settings and various different shots that can be achieved. The group will be a maximum of 4 people so there will be plenty of opportunities to work with everyone one on one if required. \nThe price includes the hide booking exclusively for our group. \nThe price does not include accommodation. It also excludes all meals.
