Raptor Special – Red Kite, Osprey and White Tailed Eagle

This workshop we cover 3 of the most iconic and sought after species in Scotland.

• Red Kites – Argaty Red Kites. Doune
• Ospreys – Trossachs Osprey Hide. Callendar
• White Tailed Eagles – Isle of Mull

Day 1:
Afternoon – Red Kite Photographic Hide.
We will meet at Argaty Red Kites at 1pm.

The afternoon session will be focusing on the Red Kites. The objective here will be to capture eye catching images of the birds in flight as they feed at the hide.

A purpose-built hide for up to 3 photographers, the Red Kite Photography Hide brings you closer to the action (distance to the feeding area 35m) for an unforgettable encounter with nature!

This hide offers big viewing hatches, room for tripods or monopods and a photography shelf for those who prefer to shoot hand-held.

Prefer to photograph outdoors? An outdoor photography deck is included for your exclusive use for photo hide visitors.

The hide looks out onto a beautiful deciduous woodland copse, which provides the perfect backdrop to photograph kites against, even in overcast weather.

Lens from 300mm to 600mm, you can use a tripod or shoot handheld.

Evening – Osprey. Callendar Osprey Hide

We will drive the short distance to Callendar and stop for food (if required in Callendar).

We will then make our way to the hide where we will have exclusive use (just our group) of the Trossachs Osprey Hide.

The hide gives you great views of the local osprey and diving shots are possible from the hide here. The pond area is kept natural and therefore parts of it can be overgrown, however with a little luck and the Osprey diving in the right place you can capture images of the Osprey exiting the water and flying past with a fish, or at the very least you will capture images of this wonderful bird flying around just meters from the hide.

Although the hide does not give you the eye level viewpoint of some of the Osprey Hides in the UK it does give you some nice natural backdrops, some excellent views of Ospreys and non stop action.

On top of this Kingfisher are regularly seen and photographed from the hide and otters are seen every day.

Lens from 170mm to 300mm for the Osprey, 300mm-600mm for the Kingfisher.

The hide is a short walk from the parking place.

The meeting place for the next day is in Oban. You can either travel up in the evening and stay in Oban or can travel early the next morning. Ferry times for the next day will be given at booking time.

Day 2: White Tailed Eagles – Mull Charters Boat Trip

Meeting point will be in Oban. Time will be given at booking and will depend on the time of our boat trip with Mull Charters. We will travel in my vehicle to Mull and the ferry cost is included in the price of the booking. When we arrive on Mull we will either do a short drive around the island looking for Hen Harrier, Short eared Owl and Golden Eagle or we will go directly to the boat meeting point. After the boat trip we will do another search of the island for the other species of raptor. We will return to Oban mid evening.

The boat trip is an incredible experience. We will take a set route to search for some of the many local White Tailed Eagles. When we are in their territory, fish will be thrown in to the water and the eagles will come to the boat and then will dive and pluck the fish from the surface of the water. It is a truly amazing experience and a trip that I have done many times over the past 8 years. It never disappoints and you never get tired of watching these impressive birds.

Please note that the boat trip is weather dependent. If the boat cannot sail then an alternative activity will be provided which will include more time looking for birds on the Isle of Mull, if the group would like to we can also use the additional time to search for otters.

Lens from 100mm to 300mm for the Eagles.

As with all my workshops I will be on hand to give advice on settings and various different shots that can be achieved. The group will be a maximum of 4 people so there will be plenty of opportunities to work with everyone one on one if required.

The price is £450pp for the 2 days min/max 4pax per day (If there are less than 4 people then a £200pp additional charge will be applicable

The price includes the hide bookings exclusively for our group, Mull Charters Boat Trip, Transport from Oban and whilst on Mull.

The price does not include accommodation. It also excludes all meals.
